In the late 1960s, Leonard Cohen was one of those fabled individuals of whom most serious music lovers had heard but who had not actually been much heard except through the voices of better-known singers who tirelessly promoted his songs. Read more

Angra’s 1998 album Fireworks, the band’s third and final album with the original lineup, doesn’t have a great reputation. It’s not as instantly memorable as their debut Angels Cry, or as progressive as Holy Land, so I think most people wrote it off without giving it a fair chance. This is unfortunate, because Fireworks is an album with the potential to really grow on you. Read more

United Abomination - It took four songs before Dave got to do his mock newscast. Last album it was the very first song. This little trick has become a Megadeth staple. This time it still works. United Abominations as a whole album is very politically tinted. This song rocks all the way up to the final part where Dave goes into his THERE WAS NO U.N. speech. Read more

While there is nothing overtly topical about the then-current issues at hand, youth alienation and war are addressed metaphorically throughout the set. “Story of Isaac,” “A Bunch of Lonesome Heroes” and “The Old Revolution” are best seen through this lens. Read more

What we have here is the brainchild of singer/guitarist/songwriter Travis Meeks. At the time of this album’s recording, he was only 17! His voice, a deep, droning croon that has often had comparisons (for good or for bad) to Eddie Vedder’s, is expertly used for the best - his screams are scattered but effective. And good lord, LISTEN to him play guitar! Carefully picking and plucking his notes and chords, he set himself quite apart from the many post-grunge bands that lack any talent whatsoever (Puddle of What?). Read more

I was pleased with this album more than 2001’s “Ten New Songs”. This one has more musical variety. I find it strange that the few Cohen reviews here are very mixed (as if this album was a radical departure or something?!!) Ridiculous. If you are a Cohen fan, you should buy this and add it to your collection. Read more

Bloc Party is an autonomous unit of un-extraordinary kids reared on pop culture between the years 1976 and the present day. They eventually concluded that their own attempts to imitate what had informed them could be innovative and fresh. Read more

It may not be the most innovative or mature album ever, but this is essential nu-metal and a must have for everybody who has 1990’s nostalgia. The bottom line is if you hate nu-metal, it would probably be wise to give “The Sickness” a wide birth, but if you do like this genre and this band, or if you are willing to listen with an open mind, you should really like this C.D. Nightwish has produced several exceptional albums, but this time they managed to top themselves. Once has that “it” appeal…it is bombastic, and yet still accessible. The album offers a great variety of tones, moods, and sounds that will satisfy any taste, and will thrill metal fans who search for originality. Read more

Apparently Hot Chip are aware that their audiences’ brains might explode with more songs like that. So after the warm, catchy electropop of “Ready for the Floor,” they try some easier fare — clattery rock’n'roll, razor-edged electronica, rambling electropop tied in twisting rock riffs, and a shimmying electropopper that evolves into a shimmering… video game theme. Yeah, that’s what it sounds like. Read more

Pop as in elevator music, its just trite, unchallenging, though relaxing musical fluff. What a shame and a travesty that this purveyor of sugary insubstantial preproccessed junk food for the ears is the biggest selling sax player in the world. Read more

It is unfortunate that Curve will not be touring the US to support this album; I saw them on the Come Clean tour, and to this day have yet to see another group that displays the kind of musical talent and integrity that Curve presents during its live shows. So many groups could and SHOULD learn a thing or two from Curve…not just how to reinvent yourself, but how to do so without destroying what you have already created. Read more
